Helensburgh Guides at Challenge Valley
For a Friday night challenge, there’s nothing Helensburgh Girl Guides like more than to get “down and dirty” at Challenge Valley Obstacle course in Cataract Scout Park at Appin, NSW. The Junior Guide and Guide Units both participate in this event that has become an annual tradition for our District. Challenge Valley is an army style obstacle course made up of 15 seperate elements including a cargo net climb, suspended bridges, rope swings, water courses and mud pits.
While it’s designed to present a challenge to the individual, the staff of the Scout Park will modify the activities on the course to suit the ages of the girls and some of the elements have minimum height restrictions so everyone feels safe while having a fantastic time.
One thing that has no barriers however is mud, (glorious mud) and Challenge Valley has plenty to wallow in. The Girls all swear that it makes their skin softer! Some of the course is currently closed while its being upgraded but even so, the activities available made for an awesome night in the great outdoors – just look at the smiles on those (muddy) faces!
PS. the Scout Park recommends that girls wear old clothes rater than uniform because of the mud.

Region Campfire
Our annual Region campfire has supported various organisations over the years. This year we were fundraising for the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home. They’re the only not-for-profit pound in Sydney and don’t place a time limit on the animals in their care. Currently at Carlton, they have to move premises and are aiming to raise $3,000,000 for their new home. Proceeds from the event will go towards them achieving their goal.
Fun in the Outdoors
Helensburgh Junior Guides have been enjoying the outdoors this term! Here they are on their bushwalk along one of the many trails of the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area.
GirlMade Showcase
What are you made of?
The GirlMade Project showcases the many and various creative and artistic talents of the girls and young women of Girl Guides NSW & ACT. This year, The GirlMade Project called for Guides of all ages and Olaves (18 to 30 year olds) to create an artwork which explores diversity. Southern Sydney Rivers Region received 63 entries and the winning artwork in each category will go forward to the State exhibition for further judging.
The winners in each category are: Junior Guides – Olivia from Maroubra Brownie Guides, Guides – Samantha from Miranda Orca Guides, Senior Guides – Julia from West Bexley St George Ranger Guides, Olave Program – Catherine Searson. Bravo to all of you – the competition was very tough!
Highly commended awards went to: Junior Guides – Ella & Samantha, both from Miranda Dolphin Junior Guides, Guides – Georgia from West Bexley Guides and Niamh from Miranda Orca Guides.
The State exhibition will be held at Hurstville Library during the Term 3 School Holidays, from Saturday 23 September to Sunday 8 October, with an Opening Night for State finalists and invited guests on Friday 22 September 2017.
